Importance of Classroom Management with Cooperative Learning:
Classroom management is essential to the cooperative classroom environment. Students will be working in groups, talking, and composing ideas which can be a loud process at times. It is imperative that the teacher has a system in place to manage and maintain a healthy learning environment in all classrooms, but particularly in cooperative learning situations. A well managed class can benefit the most from cooperative learning teams and activities.
Implementing Classroom Management:
*Set up a behavior system whether it be the traditional "card pulling" system or a chart such as this one (with each students name on a clothespin).
*Motivate students with rewards, such as homework passes, small goodies (erasers, pencils, etc) for making good choices and participating in their teams!
*Assign team points with a reward at the end of the 6 weeks. Give students team points for participation, engagement and behavior within their teams.
